Officials from the Northern Region Immigration Office have deported 48-year-old Dharam Singh, an Indian national, for staying in the country illegally.

Singh, who was working as a chef at Blue Tomato Restaurant in Mzuzu, was arrested on Friday by immigration officers after they discovered he was using an expired Temporary Residence Permit.

“He had an expired Temporary Residence Permit endorsed in his passport, which allowed him to work in Malawi; hence his arrest. After the arrest, a resolution was made to deport him from Malawi,” said Francis Chitambuli, spokesperson for the Northern Region Immigration Department.

According to Chitambuli, Singh was deported through Kamuzu International Airport on Wednesday, and he paid all costs and expenses in accordance with Section 10 of the Immigration Act.
