A Malawian national, John Makawa, was fatally shot by Mozambican police officers on January 11, 2025, while attempting to purchase fertilizers in Mozambique.

The incident occurred at Chilawe Trading Centre in the District of Mikanyera, Zambezia Province, near Chomba Police Station.

According to reports, Makawa and his fellow Malawians were confronted by Mozambican police officers for crossing the border to buy fertilizers.

The situation escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Makawa’s death.

In retaliation, the Malawians injured a Mozambican police officer and seized two rifles.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the injured police officer succumbed to his injuries on January 14, 2025, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Mozambique.

The Malawian government has been informed of the incident, and further details are expected to emerge after a meeting with Makawa’s relatives.
