The government of Malawi  through Minister of Transport and Public works Ulemu Chilapondwa has said that plan to construct an all-new and modern Chileka International Airport in Blantyre are on course.

He said this in an interview with a local news paper.

“The project involves extension of terminal buildings and to re-develop Chileka into a regional hub capable of handling larger aircraft and increased moments. Among the project’s goals include the construction of a new terminal as well as the lengthening of runway.

“Come second week of April, we shall finalize everything. The meeting with International donors shall be chaired by Minister of Finance Maxwell Mkwezalamba”, said Chilapondwa.

Chilapondwa said once the airport is done, congestion and lack of enough space in the VIP lounge will be history.

The new initiative is a brainchild of President Joyce Banda who thought it wise to embark on construction of a new  International standard airport.
