A group calling itself Concerned Muslims wants the chairman of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) Idrissa Muhammad to resign over claims that he is being partisan.

The disgruntled Muslims convened at MAM offices this week where they were demanding  that the Chairman issue a press statement stopping Muslim women from dancing at political rallies failing which he should step down.

The group’s Publicity Secretary Cassim Anafi said they are also infuriated by Muhammad who they claim has been going around distributing maize which the association got from President Joyce Banda.

The group accuses Muhammad of telling the beneficiaries to vote for Banda.

“When he is distributing maize he is telling people to vote for Joyce Banda. That is not what the association should do. We do not want him to represent us Muslims as belonging to a certain party.

“We want him to resign or that he must write all media houses informing Muslim women and political parties to stop using Muslim women from dancing at political party rallies. Our religion does not allow women to dance in front of men. The women also changes songs that praise God and praise a human being, that is a sin,” Anafi said.

But Muhammad has denied campaigning for Banda. However, he said he only told the people to appreciate Banda’s generosity.
