The ruling People’s Party (PP) has filed Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) asking for the disqualification of Khumbo Hastings Kachali as its parliamentary candidate following his resignation from the party.

The country’s Vice President resigned from the party last week.

In his speech confirming his resignation Kachali said:Many friends and colleagues alike, have been texting and writing me, asking if indeed I have resigned from PP. Ladies and gentlemen, I CAN PERSONALLY CONFIRM THAT I HAVE RESIGNED FROM PEOPLES PARTY (PP) OF PRESIDENT JOYCE BANDA. As to the Party I will be joining, I will communicate soon and I mean very soon”.

And yesterday Kachali joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Mzimba where the party conducted a campaign and he urged people in the north to vote for the party.

When approached for comment, PP General Secretary Paul Maulidi accepted his decision to resign from the party but he asked for his disqualification as a parliamentary candidate, saying he cannot stand on its banner  yet being DPP.

Kachali was booted out of the DPP during  the era of late Professor Bingu Wa Mutharika after being accused of forming parallel structures in the party along with President Joyce Banda.
