The Malawi Electoral Commission is silent on online media campaigning as campaign is expected to close tomorrow (Sunday, May 18) at 6:00 hours local time.

In a press statement from the organization signed by its chief elections officer, Willie Kalonga, the body has warned radio stations and other media houses to cease broadcasting campaign messages spread via any means after 6 am tomorrow.

MEC has, however, not included any messages to online media.

Meanwhile MEC has hinted that it is ready to punish anyone found contravening the laws. In the statement, however, MEC has not indicated how it can deal with online media more so social media owing to its being slippery from the powers of control.

MACRA has as well not indicated how on its part it intends to deal with online media which some have argued that can still be used for campaigning despite the closure of campaign.
