A 40 years old Man is in police custody in Mzimba district for allegedly selling government drugs worthy K250,000 to a Zambian National.
Mzimba Police Publicist Gift Nyirongo confirmed of the arrest and identified the suspect as Danwood Mponela, Medical Assistant at Ehlenleni Health Centre in the district.
According to the police, on June 23 Mponela sold government medical drugs comprising 330 sachets of Malaria drugs (LA) to Freddrick Mtonga 44, who hails from Zambia.
“After the deal, a Zambian left Ehlehleni in Mzimba for his home but on the way people got suspicious with him and they tipped the police officers who were manning Jenda roadblock and when the suspect reached at Jenda, he was arrested. They searched his carton and found 330 Sachets of LA drugs.
“When they interrogated him, he revealed that he bought those drugs from Danwood Mponela at Ehlehleni Health Centre and he was arrested on the spot,” Nyirongo said.
Mponela has since been charged with the offence of Theft by Public Servant contrary to section 283 of the penal Code while his friend has been charged with the offence of Illegal possession of drugs contrary to section 17(1)(a) as read with section 65 of Pharmacy-Medicine and Poisons Act.
