Police in Zomba have arrested four PMF officers for allegedly stealing about 40 litres of fuel from a Mota-Engil vehicle.
The four police officers are suspected to have negotiated with a security guard at Mota-Engil camp site to steal 40 litres of diesel from one of the cars they were supposed to be guarding.
Mota-Engil, is a construction company which is currently constructing the road from Limbe to Zomba.
According to Eastern region police Public Relations Officer Thomeck Nyaude said they effected the arrest of three Police Mobile Force (PMF) officers yesterday morning.
Nyaude also said they were trying to recover the stolen fuel as, adding “CID personnel on the ground are investigating before the suspects are taken to court to answer theft charges.”
Nyaude said the Commissioner of Police Responsible for the Eastern Region expressed concern on the development.
“When the issue was brought to his table, he was so worried and concerned saying his administration in the Eastern Region will not condone such acts and won’t back any police officer involved in issues of corruption and theft,” said Nyaude.
He (the Commissioner) says police are supposed to provide security to citizens and their property and not steal from them.”
