Two people are reported dead in a fatal road accident involving a minibus registration number KK 5644 in Dwangwe in Nkhotakota.

The accident happened on Sunday at around 05pm along the M5 road.

Police in the district confirmed of the incident and identified the driver of the minibus as Steward Kumwenda, who hails from Moyoni village in the area of Traditional Authority Ntwalo in Mzimba district.

According to the police, the driver of the said minibus was driving from Dwangwa Trading Centre whilst heading towards Nkhata Bay.

Police say after driving for about five hundred meters from the Trading Center he was trying to overtake a vehicle and while in the process the driver hit a bicycle taxi operator who was cycling from the opposite direction on the left edge of the right lane.

Due to the impact the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove off to the right side of the road where he ended up hitting and uprooting an ESCOM electric pole and a tree before hitting and killing on the spot a carpenter who had just knocking off from his workshop which is situated nearby.

The vehicle later hit a house which is allocated about 20 meters away from the road before overturning, police say.

The bicycle taxi operator identified as Charles Mponya, of Nyamula village in the area of Traditional Authority Tengani in Nsanje was rushed to Matiki Health Centre by well-wishers but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The carpenter has been identified as Mkalinacho Rajab, of Phangwa village in the area of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.

Meanwhile police are searching for the driver of the Minibus who escaped immediately after the accident.
