Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe has disclosed that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will do whatever it can to avoid the recurrence of the Cashgate Scandal.
Gondwe said this on Tuesday in Parliament during the presentation of the 2014/15 National Budget.
In his speech, Gondwe said the plundering of public funds at Capitol Hill affected the economy of the country healthily and there is need to guard its recurrence.
“The entire country was shocked with the revelations of what was involved in the ‘cashgate’ scam and the harm it did to the country. It is an episode that all of us, I am sure, will tirelessly work against its recurrence.
Therefore, on behalf of his Excellency the President and indeed on behalf of this honourable House, I wish to express our determination to do everything in our power to fight against the recurrence of ‘cashgate’ in Malawi”, said Gondwe.
Gondwe also said the Mutharika administration will make sure that the law take its cost on the matter.
“The Government, and no doubt the house as a whole, is committed to get to the bottom of this scam.
“There is a saying, honourable members, that must be applied here, “they can run but they cannot hide” and “you can fool some people sometimes but you cannot fool all the people all the time”. The time for covering up cashgate is gone”, said Gondwe.
The plundering of Public funds at Capitol Hill which occurred during the rain of former President Dr. Joyce Banda came to light after unknown thugs shot former Budget Director Mr. Paul Mphwiyo.
