Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Tarsizio Gowelo has called upon Ward Councillors to understand their roles and deliver development to their electorates.

The call comes amid growing misunderstand between Members of Parliament and Ward Councillors in terms of their roles.

Gowero made the remarks after opening a meeting in Blantyre for Chief Executives and Ward Councillors from the Southern Region on Monday.

In his speech, Gowero said it was imperative that both Councillors and Members of Parliament recognise and understand their respective roles in the society.

“We are fresh from elections and we expect both the Councillors and Members of Parliament to deliver various development projects for the benefit of the communities.

“I am getting suggestions from the Councillors in certain areas where they are looking for some improvements. Once I have wound up these regional meetings I will be sitting down with officials at the ministry to look at those recommendations”, he said.

The Minister then called for a cordial working relationship between Members of Parliament and Councillors in the course of discharging their duties.
