As hunting for people implicated in the recent report of plundering of public funds at Capitol Hill dubbed Cashgate which yet to be released continues, reports reaching FaceofMalawi indicates that Malawi Police Service (MPS) Deputy Inspector General Nelson Bophani has also been arrested.
According to information sourced by FOM, Bophani who at one point headed a multi-agency special unit that investigated Cashgate deals during the Joyce Banda administration, was arrested yesterday evening.
FOM’s effort to talk to ACB Senior Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala to find out the charges leveled against Bophani proved futile as she said she was not aware of the arrest.
According to the team of reporters that gathered at Lilongwe Police Station till late in the evening yesterday saw a convoy of police vehicles arriving into the yard with unknown man inside, who later source confirmed that it was Bophani.
According to sources who opted for anonymity said Police officers invaded his house in Chinsapo before they arrested him at his home village at Nathenje along the Blantyre-Lilongwe M1 Road.
Since the scam came to light in September last year only one case involving Principle Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Triza Namathanga Senzani has been concluded while over 70 Civil Servant and Businessperson are currently in court.
