Lawyer Alexina Phiri has been for Best Former Beauty Queen at the BEFFTA awards, she joins Malawian hip-hop artist Tay Grin on the list of Malawians nominated for the awards.

‘I am happy to have been nominated. An opportunity to put Malawi on the map is always an honour,’ commented Alexina when asked about her nomination for such a big award.

Also nominated in the Best Former Beauty Queen category are: Shakira Nabakooza, AlexSandra Gondora, Ruvombo Chinzou, Chelsea Mandizha, Amelia Lola, Gloria Elongo, Gladys Kyotungire, Michelle Esther Vigan, Samaia Tchapesseka, Chanice Thompson.

Alexina Phiri the beauty queen who was crowned Miss Malawi UK in 2013 has said she opted to keep her crown at the expense of 1st Runner-up Miss Black Africa UK because of the passion she has for Malawi.

The beauty queen revealed to media sources that she had a choice to choose one of the two titles she won in both events.

Phiri added that her 1st Runner-up title she clinched in the Miss Black Africa UK could have brought her many opportunities if she were to keep it.

“There could have been opportunities because I could have been representing the Africa continent and there were charity events lined up for me,” she added.

Tay Grin has been nominated for Best International African Act, where he competes with, Zahara, Atumpan, Davido, Wizkid, R2bees, Sarkordie, P Square, Timaya, Olamide, Eddy Kenzo, Tillaman, Dr Sid, Radio & Weasal, Omawunmi, Wande Coal, Davido, Wiz Kid, Awilo Longomba, Tiwa Savage, Emma Nyra, VVIP, Burna Boy, Sautisol, Shatta Wale, Samini, Nathalie Makoma
