Finally Ant-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has confirmed the arrest of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Nelson Bophani, accusing him of abuse of office and perverting the course of justice in an on-going investigation into the cashgate scandal.
ACB senior Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala confirmed of the development in a Press statement, saying Bophani was arrested on Thursday.
“Mr. Bophani has been arrested for a suspected charge of Misuse of Public Office and Conspiracy to Defeat Justice.
“This is in relation to the on-going investigation into cashgate”, said Egrita.
Authorities said he will answer charges on allegations that he concealed files of a fictitious trust called Good Deeds Trust of former budget director Paul Mphwiyo.
The arrest of Bophani brings the number of suspects recently arrested in connection to the plundering of public funds dubbed cashgate by the media to 6.
The issue came to light in September last year when unknown thugs shot former Budget Director Mr Paul Mphwiyo at his residence in Lilongwe.
