On Friday, the commissioner of police for Northern Region, Wilson Matinga, expressed concern over congestion existing in police cells.

Matinga was speaking this at a meeting that Northern Region police organised at its headquarters in Mzuzu as a way of strengthening a good relationship existing between police and the media in the region.

He said the strike in the judicial service has delayed the cases which could have been resolved.

The delay has made police cells to get overfilled by arrested suspects adding that it is becoming very difficult to deal with the problem as suspects like armed robbers and murders can not be taken out as a way of creating room in the cells.

“The strike by the courts has made our already tiny cells to get choked. The population of criminals is increasing but the cases are not adhered to because of this strike pending in the judicial service department,” he said.

The commissioner suggested if the disagreements could have been resolved faster to get lid of the problem which is now growing big.

The Malawi Judicial Service has been on strike following a proposal to Government on the adjustment of their payments a thing which has resulted cases to get unsolved.
