Former Malawi’s Vice President and Member of the opposition People’s Party (PP) Khumbo Hastings Kachali has said he does not regret endorsing President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika ahead of last year’s general election as best Presidential candidate Malawians should vote for.
Kachali said this in an interview with one of the privately owned media house just days after being recalled to PP to help the Party in the rebuilding process since the party founder Dr. Joyce Banda is in self-imposed exile.
“Everyone one knows what happened for me to resign from my positions and start supporting President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika ahead of the 2014 Presidential race and I don’t regret doing so because it was not possible for me to do so in PP as my position was given to someone else,” said Kachali.
Kachali said he has returned to PP not take away the position of anyone as alleged by others but he has returned to help the Party in the rebuilding process ahead of the 2019 general election.
“I have returned to PP to help the Party to reclaim its lost glory which was destroyed by few greedy people for a short period and have dumped the Party since it is not in power and I urge my fellow PP members to forget the past and join hands in rebuilding the process,” said Kachali.
Kachali dumped PP after President Banda appointed Sosten Gwengwe as his Presidential running mate in the last year’s election which saw Mutharika emerging victorious.
Just after the election, Banda left the country for United States of America and she has never returned since then.
Earlier this month, some PP bigwigs in the Northern Region headed by Christopher Mzomera Ngwira appointed Kachali as interim leader but he was rejected by the Party.
