Voting has started in the much awaited Local Government by-elections in five wards.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is conducting the by-elections in Khwawa Ward in Karonga South Constituency, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu City constituency, Msikisi Ward in Mangochi Central Constituency, Central Ward in Zomba Central Constituency and Luchenza Ward in Thyolo East Constituency
.
A visit by FaceofMalawi reporters in Chibanja ward established that voting was delayed by 30 minutes due to the fact that the ink was not indelible enough and monitors for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were not familiar.
While at Khwawa Ward in Karonga, Poling centres were opened in time but voters are not coming out in large numbers. The ward had over 11 thousand registered voters.
In a press statement issued by MEC Chairperson Maxon Mbendera on Monday made available to FOM, he appealed to voters to observe polling procedures once they have voted until the results are released.
“The polling procedures have not changed. When you arrive at your Polling Station, polling staff will receive you and check your details. Only when your name is found in the voters’ register, will you be allowed to vote,” Justice Mbendera said.
“Leave the station and go home immediately after voting. Do not wait for results at the centre. Polling stations are restricted areas. So do not be tempted to hang around.”
Meanwhile MEC is expected to release the results of the by-elections on Wednesday.
