A 34-year old woman is in Police custody in Nkhotakota for allegedly dumping her newly born bay on Friday in a pit-latrine to conceal birth.

Nkhunga Police Station Public Relations Officer Sub-Inspector Austin Kaunda confirmed of the development in an interview and identified the suspect as Naomi Kazokoko.

According to Kaunda, the baby was discovered by passers-by who heard her cry from the pit latrine and alerted the community to rescue her.

The new-born baby was taken to Luwalazi Health Centre where she was examined and taken care of prior to the arrest of the mother.

When questioned, the suspect said the new-born had fallen into the pit latrine by accident.

“I felt the urge to relieve myself and I went to the toilet only to deliver in the process and the baby dropped into the pit latrine by accident,” explained Kazokoko, looking very remorseful.

The woman admitted that she had concealed the pregnancy until Friday when the incident occurred.

According to the Police, the suspect will appear in court soon answer charges of concealing birth which is contrary to Section 232 of the Penal Code.

Kazokoko hails from hails from Longwe Village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota.
