Some officials in the Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have accused Salima Central MP, Felix Jumbe and former legislator, Lyton Dzombe of being behind the call for the resignation of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

According information sourced by FaceofMalawi, some district chairpersons in the North and Central are demanding for the immediate resignation of Chakwera and immediate call for the emergency convention.

The district Chairpersons are accusing Chakwera of flouting procedures in the recent reshuffle in the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party which saw Jumbe being demoted, saying only the Party convention .

But in a twist of events, nine of 12 district chairpersons in the Central Region have accused Jumbe of being behind the whole saga.

“During the convention of 2013, we empowered our president to fill some Nec positions. We know there are some people who have been bringing this confusion in the party. They are people who lost in elections, and there is another person from Dowa,” said Ponsilio Foloma Mwale, one of the district Chairpersons.

Concurring with Mwale’s remarks, Blantyre District Chairperson George Thambo said the move taken by the two will not yield any results, saying Chakwera remains MCP leader until 2019.

When approached for comment, Jumbe distanced himself the claims, saying he is not part of the call for the resignation of Chakwera and the call for emergency convention.

On his part, Dzombe expressed ignorance on the matter.

Meanwhile Chakwera is yet to respond on the matter.
