Police in Mangochi have recovered money amounting to MK4.3 million cash suspected to have been stolen from Airtel Shop at Safari Filling Station in the District on Wednesday.
Thugs are said to have invaded the shop on the early hours of Wednesday and went away with the cash chest containing the cash plus airtime top-up vouchers worth K2.1 million.
After failing to open the cash chest, the thieves dumped the cash along Shire River.
National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press, saying the cash chest was discovered by Children.
“Some children trapping birds along the river bank noticed the wheelbarrow with the cash chest and reported to their parents who later informed the police,” said Gondwa.
Gondwa said the thieves tied guards on duty before breaking into the shop.
Meanwhile Police have launched a manhunt for suspected criminals.
