Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime of plotting to oust the Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya during the 46th sitting of Parliament scheduled to start today.

MCP officials led by Public Relations Officer (PRO) Alekeni Menyani flanked MCP’s publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila, legal adviser Peter Chakwantha and Kasungu Central Member of Parliament (MP) Amon Nkhata said this during a media briefing in the capital Lilongwe.

In his speech, Menyani said the threat by DPP government will not deter them from providing checks and balances to government.

Menyani said the Party is there to protect the Speaker from any evil plan by the DPP government as revealed by its intelligence unit.

“We are not afraid to protect the Speaker. He has been following procedures and regulations and no one can attack him without our protection. You cannot gag a Speaker through propaganda,” he said.

Turning to the extravagances report in the speaker’s office where it is alleged that four vehicles costing money amounting to MK300 million, Menyani said the party leaders were ready to give back the vehicles if the government reversed the policy on entitlements for them.

Parliament Secretariat has explained that it bought vehicles for the Speaker and his deputies as well as leader of opposition because the previous office holders bought the vehicles they were using as part of their entitlement and Parliament resorted to hiring vehicles for the new team.

Meanwhile President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has officially opened the 46th of Parliament with a moving speech.
