A 22-year-old medical assistant is in Police custody in Phalombe for allegedly stealing government drugs worth MK 841, 500.00.

Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi confirmed of the arrest and identified the suspect as Chimwemwe Maurisu who was working under Phalombe District Health Office as a Medical Assistant at Kalinde Health Centre.

Nkhwazi said Maurisu was arrested after failing to account for 69 boxes of LA (Co-artem) of different packages and sizes.

According to information at hand, the said drugs are said to have been sold to a former sales representative of the Population Services International (PSI) Adriel Jumbe, 36, of Kolore village T/A Santhe in Kasungu.

Nkhwazi said the exercise took place a period between July 2014 to May 2015.

He said the medical drugs were then being sold to private hospitals across the country by the second suspect (Jumbe).

Meanwhile, Chimwemwe Maurisu is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of Theft by Public Servant contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code.
