Shock gripped residents of Mitundu in Lilongwe Thursday when 21-year-old Yohane Chambu hacked his 52 year-old father Sainani Chambu to death in cold blood, police said.

The son who is currently in police custody is said to have severely beat up his father before poking out his both eyes and later chopped off his head.

Confirming the incident to Malawi News Agency (Mana), Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer Kingsley Dandaula said the suspect was well known for smoking Indian hemp popularly known as chamba.

“On Thursday the suspect went to his parents’ house and beat up his mother before cutting her arm with a panga knife. He also picked up a child and threw it away. Later on he proceeded to the garden where his father was working and beat him up, took out his eyes and cut off his head,” said Dandaula.

He said the suspect is expected to answer charges of murder contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code.

Both the deceased and the suspect hail from Fisi village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe.mana
