As debate continues on the recent arrest of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) top officials on treason charges, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) have ruled out any plans of arresting Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya.
The Police arrested MPC’s Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila, Peter Lewis Chakhwantha and Ulemu Msungama for allegedly being among those people who were planning to oust President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika through WhatsApp conversation.
According to media reports, the Speaker was on police wanted list as he used his official vehicle to aid Kabwila to flee from police arrest on Monday.
Kabwila is said to have used the Speaker’s car PAR 1 to head for the German Embassy.
Police arrested her before she got to the embassy.
National Police Spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa and leader of government in Parliament Francis Kasaila confirmed to the press that the Speaker had aided Kabwila’s escape from Parliament.
Speaking on Wednesday during media briefing, Inspector General of Police (IG) Lexten Kachama told the press that despite the Speaker aiding Kabwila to flee, the police have no any plans of arresting him.
Meanwhile Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya said that police erred in setting up a road block near Parliament and arresting parliamentarians while the House is sitting.
