Karonga Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church has come out of its cocoon to clarify on the suspension of church offering, saying the suspension only applies to “paper Sunday”.
Bishop Martin Mtumbuka told congregants that he has decided to suspend the paper Sunday to allow them utilise the little cash they have to buy food in their homes following the hunger crisis which is currently wreaking havoc across the country.
But certain media houses twisted the information, saying Mtumbuka has suspended all offerings which include tithes, paper Sunday, Sunday offerings and other major collections.
Speaking in an interview with the Press, Karonga Diocese Secretary Moloka Sikwese said the suspension only applies to ‘Paper Sunday’.
“The truth of the matter is that Bishop Mtumbuka has suspended only Paper Sunday and any other fundraising activity. He has not suspended Sunday offerings or tithe,” said Sikwese.
Speaking after announcing the suspension where he launch of the diocese’s strategic plan for the coming five years on Saturday, Mtumbuka said he is very shocked with the way Malawians are suffering at the moment.
Mtumbuka also advised youths across the country to be responsible in whatever they do.
