Police in Mzuzu have arrested four Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) employees and three others for allegedly being stealing seven electricity generators from body.
Mzuzu Police publicist Martin Bwanali confirmed of the arrest in an interview with the press and identified the four as Dickens Kalua an ex-watchman, Davie Mtumpha stores clerk, Brighton Mkandawire and Petros Gandiseni.
Bwanali also identified the three others as Watson Phiri, 27, from Mapheto Village in the area of TA Chulu in Kasungu was driving Toyota Will Cypher IT registration number 5549 while Daniel Munthali, 31, from Peter Jere Village in the area of Inkosi Mtwalo in Mzimba was driving Toyota Vitz registration number KK 5160.
The third driver, Smalley Banda, 27, from Kasalika Village in the area of TA Kaomba in Kasungu was driving Toyota Passo registration number RU 5103.
Bwanali said officers, who were on patrol, became wary when they saw three vehicles heading to the warehouse around 11 pm on February 28 2016.
He said the officers followed the vehicles to see what will happen at MEC warehouse in the city.
“They found Dickens Kalua an ex-watchman at MEC loading ‘gensets’ in the three vehicles. That is when he, alongside three drivers and two watchmen on duty, got arrested after failing to give satisfactory explanation as to where the gensets were going,” Bwanali said.
According to Bwanali, the four MEC employees and the ex-watchman will answer the charge of theft by servant while the drivers, who were allegedly hired from a taxi rank, will answer theft charges.
