Court officials, police and officials from the department of wild parks are today burning a stock pile of at least 781 pieces of ivory worth 4 billion Malawi kwacha.
The development follows a court ruling for the ivory to be torched and the throwing away of the injunction obtained the Tanzanian government.
The Tanzania government claimed that part the torched ivory was smuggled from its country.
The exercise started exactly at 9am at Mzuzu High Court premises and one of the eyewitnesses told this publication that wildlife international bodies, the army and parks officials are all over guarding the place to ensure that all the pieces are burnt to ashes.
It is expected that the fire will take at least three days before putting it off.
