Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Acting National Coordinator Martin Chimphwanya has condemned the bloody violence that marred the joint rally organized by three major opposition political parties, saying the violence is a threat to democracy.

The thugs armed with matchetes invaded Chibavi ground where Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera together with opposition People’s Party (PP) and Alliance for Democracy (Aford) were holding a rally.

Thugs hacked four MCP supporters including Chakwera’s personal aide.

Speaking in an interview with the press, Chimphwanya said as the body is deeply shocked with the violence in Mzuzu.

Chimphwanya also questioned the police for failing to provide security at the rally, saying action demonstrates something evil.

He said as the Police have to provide security to everyone regardless of being in the opposition or the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Some quarters have linked the attacking to DPP, saying their main target was Chakwera.

Meanwhile Chakwera is this afternoon expected to hold a press briefing regarding the violence in Mzuzu.
