The High Court in Lilongwe has adjourned hearing sentence of a case involving cashgate convict Leonard Kalonga to June 7, 2016.

Kalonga was last year convicted after pleading guilty of charges of money laundering involving close to K3.7 billion.

The case failed to resume yesterday at the high court due to busy schedule of State Prosecutor Mary Kachale who was also handling a shooting case of former budget director Paul Mphwiyo.

The development left presiding Judge Fiona Mwale to adjourn the case to June.

The Court is also expected to conduct a Newton hearing before submissions.

Newton hearing is held when a situation arises at mitigation stage whereby the State and the defence do not agree.

Under the hearing, the court can decide to arrange that the matter move forward by either a jury or to hear a witnesses.
