Despite efforts by President Prof. Peter Mutharika of encouraging Malawians to embrace local products, Parliament has gone a different way.

While launching the buy Malawi strategy, Mutharika directed all civil servants and those working in government agencies to be wearing casual clothes on Friday as a way of promoting Malawians products.

But Speaker of Parliament, Richard Msowoya announced Monday in the house that Parliamentarians will maintain their formal dress code on Friday going against Mutharika’s directive.

Said Msowoya, “As you are all aware that there is a directive by the President who is championing the Buy Malawi strategy that on Friday, we all must be in our informal dressing, the business committee of this House met to digest on the matter however, there was a lot that was agreed to be scrutinised further.

“This therefore means that Parliament will maintain the normal dressing,” said Msowoya.

When contacted, Member of Parliament for Dedza East, Alekeni Menyani said Members of Parliament are Malawians as such they must also take part and embrace the changes happening in the country.
