Human right activist Billy Mayaya has disclosed that notification letters of the planned demonstrations against fee hike at University of Malawi (UNIMA) have been delivered to Lilongwe Police and the District Commissioner’s office.
Mayaya disclosed this in a short statement posted on his official Facebook page on Thursday seen by FaceofMalawi reporter.
The demonstrations are scheduled for August 4, 2016 in the capital Lilongwe and Mayaya has urged all well-wishers to join the protest.
“Letters for #FeesMustFall Solidarity Demonstrations delivered to Lilongwe Police and DC. PARENTS GUARDIANS AND STUDENTS ! PLEASE JOIN US ON 4TH AUGUST 2016 AT KCN ROUNDABOUT TO DEMAND SUBSIDISED TERTIARY EDUCATION! Right to Education is key to equity,” reads the statement in part.
The recent fee hike by the University Council for both normal and mature entry students has attracted strong condemnation with students from Chancellor College, Polytechnic and Kamuzu College of Nursing protesting in the streets.
The Protest led to the arrest of over 50 students by Police and the students were charged with conduct likely cause breach of peace.
Meanwhile opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has backed the students for protesting against fee hike.
