President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has hailed sitting President of the Republic of Zambia Edgar Chagwa Lungu for being declared winner in the just ended elections.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared Lungu as winner on Monday after securing over fifty-per cent (50.35%) in Thursday’s vote, defeating his main rival, Hakainde Hichilema, who won almost forty-eight per cent (47.67%).
In a statement posted on his official Facebook Page, Mutharika congratulated the people of Zambia for the peaceful election.
“Elections in any democratic setting fully underline the participation of the citizenry in governance issues.
“To the people of Zambia I say; well done for a peaceful election process. Whether your candidate has won or not, may you place the aspirations of your nation ahead of everything,” said Mutharika.
He added: “The people of Malawi are proud to have peace loving and God fearing neighbors that you are.”
Lungu is the 6th President of the Republic of Zambia.
