The High Court in Lilongwe will today resume sentence hearing of former Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara and his co-accused MacDonald Kumwembe and Pika Manondo in the shooting case of former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo.

The sentence hearing scheduled for last week Monday was adjourned to today following the accident that involved two lawyers representing third accused Raphael Kasambara.

Apart from that, the first and second accused in the case complained that they were not ready with their submissions as they were not notified by the state and the court that they will appear in court Monday.

In his ruling, Mtambo gave the two, Kumwembe and Manondo to file their submissions documents to the court and the state by Thursday and the case was adjourned to today.

Mtambo convicted Kumwembe and Manondo last month on the two charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder Mphwiyo while Kasambara was convicted for Conspiracy charge.

Just after conviction, Kasambara vowed to appeal his conviction, and so far a notice of appeal on the same had been lodged with the the Supreme Court of Malawi, according to the Judiciary.

Mphwiyo’s shooting is widely believed to have exposed Cashgate, the systematic plundering of public resources at Capital Hill.
