43 year old Robert Mwafulirwa died on the spot while 12 of his relations are receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) after being involved in a road accident in Nkhotakota.
Nkhunga Police Public Relations Officer, Precious Makuti confirmed the development to Malawi News Agency (Mana) Friday saying the family members met their fate Thursday at Kabiza in Nkhotakota.
He said the people were on their way to Karonga from Zomba where they were supposed to attend a tombstone unveiling ceremony of their departed father.
The PRO explained that the driver and owner of the Ford Ranger registration number DZ 3431 Humphrey Chiwaula, was trying to overtake another vehicle but in the process realized that there was another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
“He lost control of the vehicle when he tried to return to his lane. The tyre burst and the vehicle overturned several times.
“Currently the 12 have been referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital after sustaining various injuries,” Makuti said.
Police have so far observed that it is high time their traffic department considered putting road signs along the already damaged Nkhotakota Dwangwa road which registers accidents every week resulting from its condition.
As we went to press, family members were working on repatriating the dead body from Matiki Health Centre in Dwangwa to Chimwang’ali Village, Traditional Authority Mwirang’ombe in Karonga.
