Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Salima North West Jessie Kabwila has asked Minister of Education Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano to humbly resign for failing to handle the academic crisis in the country which has resulted in the closure of some colleges.

Kabwila said this in the National Assembly on Tuesday after Minister of Education publicly told the August House that he is not responsible for the management of the universities in the country.

In his speech, Fabiano said that government redirected responsibilities of managing universities to councils.

The remarks did not please the opposition MPs with leader of People’s Party (PP) Uladi Mussa questioning the reasoning of Fabiano, saying shifting blame to University Council is not helping matters at all.

“The President recently was in the papers denying responsibility on the closure of the Universities in the country and now Minister of Education is also saying the same so who should Malawians rely on regarding the university saga?

“We are all here because of Education,” said Mussa.

Before Kabwila added her voice on the matter, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Esther Mcheka Chilenje criticized Minister of Education for shifting blame to University Council, saying as responsible Minister he should provide answers to the concerns raised by the house.

“University Council has no representation in this house and the Minister is entrusted with the responsibility to respond to all queries and concern regarding the Ministry,” said Chilenje.

Chilenje’s remarks attracted ululations from opposition benches.

On her part, Kabwila said Minister of Education seems not to be in charge and he should resign immediately.

Reacting to the claims, Minister of Education defended this by saying things will be back to normal any time soon.
