The Lilongwe Magistrate Court has adjourned the case of Vincent Murekezi, a Rwandan genocide convict to give government a chance to liaise with the Rwandan Government on his extradition.

Murekezi was arrested last week on the grounds that he is by the Rwandan Government for being implicated in the 1994 Rwandan Genocide in which about one million died in 100 days.

He was tried and convicted in absentia for his role.

On Tuesday, he appeared before the magistrate court in Lilongwe to start the extradition proceedings, but Senior Assistant Chief State Advocate Steve Kayuni asked the court for 21 days for the government of Malawi to liaise with Rwanda on the case.

Kayuni also told the court that Murekezi has another charge of corruption dating back to 2008 involving the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) which he has to answer before his extradition.

Meanwhile Murekezi has been remanded back to Maula Prison waiting to appear before the court.
