Despite the maximum sentence one is supposed to reap for an offense of rape is life imprisonment, the Msongandeu Magistrate Court in Dowa has slapped a man with only 30 months in prison after he was found guilty for raping an 80 year old granny.
Reports indicate that Biwi Ephraim aged 54, attacked the granny on the way when she was coming from Chiponda village where she went to drink beer. Upon reaching Chifisi village he pulled the granny into the bush where he raped her.
During his trial in court, Ephraim denied the offense but was later taken down after the court came up with four witnesses.
When he was given a chance to comment, he pleaded for forgiveness claiming he is a family member with a responsibility of seven children and that he is old.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant Benadictor Mathambo asked the court to give a stiff punishment to the convict as an example to others but surprisingly the first grade magistrate Amulani Phiri sentenced the rapist to only 30 months in prison.
Ephraim hails from Nyemba village Traditional Authority Chiwere in the same district, Dowa.
