Police in Nkhotakota have arrested a 34-year-old primary school teacher for raping and impregnating his 16-year-old standard eight pupil.

The suspect has been identified as Lawrence Matewere who teaches at Kasangazi primary school in Nkhotakota, according to police deputy spokesperson in Nkhotakota, Paul Malimwe.

The case came to limelight when the victim`s mother noticed some changes on the girl, but it has been established that the teacher started sexually abusing the child in 2016 when he asked her to be attending part time classes at his house.

“The teacher has been sexually abusing the young girl on several other occasions,” said Malimwe.

He continued to say that, “The girl told her mother that she is pregnant and that her class teacher who is also the neighbor is responsible.”

Reports say the teacher had asked the girl to abort it by giving her K3000 but she refused.

The case was reported to police when the girl`s mother noticed and asked the teacher but he responded by saying he would marry the child; a response that did not please the mother.

Pregnancy test done at Mwansambo health care revealed that the young girl was four months pregnant.

Mwansambo hails from Mbalame village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba and he is expected to answer charges of defilement contrary to section 138 of the penal code.
