Social commentator Emily Mkamanga has criticized the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for forcing Mzuzu and Blantyre City Council to donate to the party’s recent dinner and dance held at Kamuzu Palace dabbed ‘blue night’.

According to facts at hand, Mzuzu City Council donated K3.5 million while Blantyre City Assembly donated K5 million.

Sources say the Blantyre City Council sent a cheque worth K2.5 million but the party sent back the cheque saying the money was peanuts, forcing the assembly to write a K5 million cheque.

Speaking in an interview with MIJ fm during ‘Good morning Malawi’ aired on Thursday morning, Mkamanga faulted the ruling party for conduct.

Mkamanga said city councils in Malawi are not supposed to be partisan.

“All city councils in Malawi are funded by tax payers’ money and it is very said for city council to use such money to fund party functions. This must stop,” said Mkamanga.

Meanwhile Civil Society Organisations have asked the two councils to get back the money.
