As the day draws near for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to hold by-elections in some of the constituencies in the country, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) on Monday held primary elections in Nsanje Lalanje Constituency.

The elections saw Mr. Lawrence Sitolo outclassing Mr Timothy Mwelatu with 1,648 against 17 votes.

The development means, Sitolo will represent MCP in the by-elections scheduled for October 17, 2017 in Nsanje Lalanje Constituency.

Nsanje Lalanje parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Honorable Sam Mganda of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Speaking to the press after the primaries, MCP’s Director of Elections Hon. Maxwell Thyolera said the party will carry the day come October 17.

“The large numbers of Area committees as well as large turnout at the primary elections clearly shows how much ground MCP has gained in the lower Shire,” Said Thyolera.

He said 170 Area committees participated in the elections.
